Gestures help students learn math concepts

New research reported in Education Week has demonstrated that elementary school students learn, and retain, math concepts better if they are accompanied by hand gestures by their teachers.  Interestingly, the authors note that teachers in the U.S. (and Canada?) use fewer gestures in their teaching than European teachers.  What do you think of the concept of “embodied cognition”?
