How do teens develop their sense of self-esteem?

New research from  Concordia University looked at how teens in both Montreal and in northern Columbia expressed what was important to them in terms of their developing self-esteem.  Interestingly, the cross-cultural results were similar, with those from  upper-middle class families valuing social skills and those from more lower-middle class families valuing educational achievement. Also of note was that, in both cities, girls tended to express higher self-esteem than boys, which is not the usual finding.  Interesting – kids are kids wherever they grow up, it would seem.
