Are iPads a benefit in the classroom?

Amidst all the controversy about too much technology in classrooms vs our loss of handwriting (see The Boston Globe article), an interesting new study from Northwestern University, reported in EurekAlert, suggests that it is really the interpersonal collaboration, not the use of the gadget, that holds the key to using technology successfully in classes, even with students as young as kindergarten age.  How is technology being used in your area?  And what is the status of teaching cursive?
