What purpose does corporal punishment play in schools?

A recent book review by Alan Kazdin in APA’s PsychCRITIQUES looks at the prevalence of corporal punishment in schools in the US, and provides an overview of the research associated with corporal punishment, and alternatives to it.  An interesting read, with a lot of good information.  Are there still provinces in Canada that allow corporal punishment in schools?  And if so, which ones?  Kazdin maintains that school psychologists have a role in ending this damaging practice.
