Do adult expectations result in higher numbers of ADHD diagnoses?

A study from the University of Miami, published in JAMA and reported in HealthDay, relates the rising rates of ADHD diagnoses to the increasing academic expectations adults are placing on children.  The authors argue that children need to learn through play, but with the longer school days, academic emphasis, and homework assignments, kids aren’t developmentally ready to meet the expectations and hence they demonstrate ADHD symptoms.  An interesting perspective.
